“Opportunities are endless when we mentor, coach, and lift up women in construction” -Lori Gillett, CEO
For day 4 of WIC Week, we’re spotlighting our very own CEO!
Lori Gillett is a third-generation owner, who grew up helping out on job sites. Lori earned her Civil Engineering degree from Ohio Northern University. She started her construction career as a laborer for her grandfather’s company, Kokosing Construction Company.
Lori has worked her way up, serving in many different roles. She has always been passionate about supporting women to advance in their career, and within the construction industry.
She co-founded the WISE program (Women Idea’s and Strategies Exchange)- an in-house mentorship program for women. She was also grateful to have been a girl scout in her younger years, and is now a Girl Scout troop leader for her daughter’s troop. Lori is dedicated to girl's and women’s advocacy. She recalls a quote… “Girls with dreams become women with vision. If you’re going to live, leave a legacy.”
According to Lori, “there is still much progress to be made to show women they can hold high positions in construction, while balancing their work and personal life. They shouldn’t have to sacrifice time from family or other passions, to be a significant leader in the industry. Ultimately, we achieve success only with each other.”
Thank you, Lori, for being an example and leader, especially for women in construction!

Day 3 of #WICWeek: We're so proud of Colleen and Anna! Read about their experience in construction!Colleen and Anna are two women of construction, and both are serving on the Board of Directors of NAWIC #86 Columbus as Chapter President (Colleen) and Chapter Vice President (Anna).
"This industry is a great way to have a direct impact on the community you live in. Hard work pays off, and a career in construction is a great way to provide for yourself and your family," Colleen said.
As for Anna, she encourages young women to consider their futures in construction.
"Go into the industry if you feel even a slight interest. Get as much on the job training as possible. Take co-ops and internships in all the different roles and areas in construction so you can to see what is the best fit for you. You might be surprised!"

It is day 2 of #WICweek and we are spotlighting Senior Project Manager, Jamie Srbljan.
Jamie has been in construction for 18 years now. She began with an interest in civil engineering, then transitioned to construction management. “I ended up in construction management because I quickly realized that I wanted to produce a physical product, not just a design. I always loved the idea that people would benefit from something I was a part of making. I still take pride in driving by previous projects, seeing them being used, and knowing I helped build it.”
Today, Jamie is managing the St. Charles Convocation Center project. This new 25,000-SF addition to the existing school will seat up to 1,200 people! The new facility will house a competition court, two practice courts, locker rooms, concessions facilities, and will contain state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment and lighting systems. It will host various activities such as basketball, volleyball, graduations, ceremonies, concerts, and more!
“This Convocation Center is my 4th project with St. Charles. My first project with them was in 2012- I worked on their West Campus facility. In 2015, I worked on the main locker room, and in 2017, I helped upgrade their Physics room. I’ve enjoyed investing my time here for St. Charles.”
Every project has its’ own unique challenges. It is up to our team to find solutions that achieve the client’s goals and produce a project that can be enjoyed by our communities for years to come. “I love finding solutions. The most challenging part of this project (the Convocation Center) would have to be working around an occupied and active school, as well as joining this new addition to a 60+ year old building. There has been a lot of planning and reviewing of existing conditions to make sure the new addition would align seamlessly with the existing school. We have also been very intentional to keep the active school staff and students safe and separate from all construction activities. Their safety is our top priority.”
Regardless of the project, Jamie enjoys one thing that all have in common... “I love building projects for our clients to enjoy for years to come, and I also love getting to work with amazing people on a team who all want to achieve the same goal. There is something about being surrounded by people with the same passion and drive as you. And there is so much we can achieve all together.”
Thank you, Jamie, for being amazing at what you do. We cannot wait to see the finished project this year!

Today we’re celebrating the start of Women In Construction Week! So, let’s talk about why women choose a career in construction.
Construction offers a variety of job opportunities at all levels of education and experience. There are intersecting career path tracks you can start, then switch over to another, depending on your interest. No matter which construction track you’re on, you’ll learn skills that you “build” on, as you grow up through the ranks.
When it comes to compensation, the national average gender wage gap is favorable toward women in the construction industry. Records have shown that women can earn as much, or more, than men.
The future is bright for those building a career in construction. The industry is always expanding and in need of good builders, so opportunities should always be available. And, those in construction learn a lifelong skillset that is very valuable, not just in the workforce, but at home too!
If you’re a woman, interested in learning more about the construction industry and accelerating a construction career, you can visit National Association of Women in Construction or contact our talent management department!
You can check out the NAWIC Columbus chapter too NAWIC Columbus - Chapter #86! Three of our CK team members are on the 2023 board and would be happy to connect with you!
